Pit and Peak: week of 9.2.13
Pit: The pit of this week BY FAR was being sick and icky. I even took a day off work for it (a pretty big deal for me because I hate admitting that I am sick. It takes a lot to make me take a break!). I hate just having absolutely no energy and feeling terrible. THE WORST.
Peak: The peak of my week was...GETTING A NEW JOB! Okay, I've been keeping this on the DL, but I've been so unfulfilled at my current position. Idk, I am just so used to being mentally challenged all the time at college and my current job was just not mentally doing it for me. I interviewed while sick and managed to land the position, and I gave my 2 weeks' notice on Friday. Very excited to begin this new role in the advertising industry! I think this will be a muchhh better fit! Also close seconds to this peak: making up with my best friend and moving into my new apartment!
My furniture is supposed to come to my new place this Wednesday. Yes, I am taking a personal day off my current job so I can be there to move in the stuff and get building (hayy Ikea furniture!). Very excited to get everything officially settled.

You flatter me! (Another Liebster Award!)
To steal entirely from my last post - the Liebster Award is a Favorite Blog Award – Liebster is German for “favorite”. It is awarded to a blog that has less than 200 followers. It’s a great way to interact with other smaller blogs and to get everyone more connected! HOW COOL!
In order to accept this award, I must do several things (this is slightly different than the last time I accepted - I feel like there is a telephone game effect going on here!):
- List 11 facts about myself
- Nominate 11 bloggers for the award (YAY!)
- Let them know about the nomination
- Answer the 11 questions I was asked when nominated
- Ask 11 questions for the new award winners to answer
Okay, let's begin, shall we?
Part 1 requires I list 11 facts about myself:
- My greatest fear is being boring (sounds pathetic but it's true).
- I have a "life bucket list" that is posted as one of those sticky notes on my laptop desktop screen.
- One day I want to move to either London or Australia - two of the coolest cultures that speak English (since I know no other languages).
- I have a very hard time telling right from left, which has sometimes made driving and getting to places very challenging.
- I generally don't get along very well with girls - a lot of my best friends are guys - girls are dramatic and that's annoying to me.
- Moving to NYC was the best decision I've ever made, and the hardest transition process! But I love it :)
- Moving IN NYC is one of the most challenging things a person can do, I'm finding that out first hand right now in the apartment search process
- I am OBSESSED with pop culture. The fact that I know what is happening with Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds' marriage more than I know what is happening in Congress right now is frankly kind of alarming.
- Christmas is my favorite holiday. HANDS DOWN. Even though it's absolutely freezing, November-January 1 is my favorite time of year.
- Even though I LOVEE living in a city as crazy and fast-paced as NYC, I really need a couple days away in some secluded place. I need a vacation!
- I'm supposed to be doing work at my job right now but CLEARLY this takes priority! YOLO.
Okay, moving on to part 2. Nominate 11 bloggers to get the award! Oh this is the exciting part - having under 200 followers is key so that smaller bloggers can discover each other :) And my nominees are (in no particular order)...
- http://preptista.com/
- http://catchingzee.wordpress.com/
You guys are all so amazing and I am so happy to nominate you for this award! Which leads me to part 3 where I will make you all aware that I have nominated you :) (will do that after this has been posted!)
On to part 4 - answering the 11 questions that I was asked when I was nominated.
- What is your favorite thing to cook/bake? This does not apply to me because I can neither cook nor bake. Pretty much anything that can be put in the microwave is a winner in my book!
- If you could invite three people to dinner (living, dead, real or fictional), who would it be? Rosa Parks (fascinated by her courage and ability to ignite the Civil Rights Movement), Jennifer Lawrence (she is AMAZING!), and Amanda Bynes (definitely would be interesting to see her in that setting).
- What is your dream vacation? Anywhere where there is a beach!
- What is your favorite thing to do on a rainy day? Watch movies/casually day drink with friends.
- What was your dream job when you were a kid? Be a famous singer - I think it's safe to say we've all had that fantasy growing up.
- Apple or oranges? Apples, unless I'm sick, where I think that by eating a ton of oranges I'll magically become healthy again.
- What is your favorite beverage? Anything with alcohol...hey, I just graduated college! Cut me some slack please :)
- What is something that made you laugh recently? The last question. Also my friend (Chloe!) that I'm talking to on gchat right now has said some pretty hilarious things.
- Favorite holiday? Christmas - woahh weird coincidence I said this in my facts about me!
- What book do you most recommend? Confessions of an Advertising Man by David Ogilvy. That is just bc I'm an advertising nerd and I absolutely LOVEDDD it!
- Beach, city, new culture? Which do you prefer for a weekend getaway? Beach, PLEASEEE!! (Let's go right now!)
Finally, part 5 is where I make up questions that my nominees have to answer when formally accepting their award!
- If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
- Salty or sweet? (Food, just to be clear)
- Mac or PC?
- What is your spirit animal? Why?
- What is the TV or movie character that reminds you most of yourself?
- What is your favorite part about blogging?
- What is your weirdest talent? (We all have one - don't be shy!)
- If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
- What is the most kind-hearted thing you have done for anyone, with expecting nothing in return?
- Favorite TV channel?
- When you look at your life right now, are you genuinely happy with where you are? If not, what can you do to change that? (Now go out and do it!)
Again, thanks so much, Annie! And congrats everyone, let's keep the award-giving going!

I've developed a SLIGHT work crush...
About a week before I began my job, I was looking on my company's website. There was an extremely informative article written by a guy that I really really liked. It made me SO incredibly excited to start my job, and I noticed that one of the accounts he works on was the account that I was going to be working on too! I thought it was so neat that I was going to be working with someone who was so knowledgeable about the advertising world and I couldn't wait to meet him.
It had been 3 weeks at my job and I still hadn't run into this advertising genius. I had kinda forgotten about him (other than the fact that I found this official copy of his article lying around the office and hung it up on my desk. What can I say - I'm an advertising nerd). On a Friday afternoon, we had a meeting, so I got there a few minutes early (an EXTREME RARITY for my company, where arriving 5 minutes late would be considered on-time). There were 3 people in the room, 2 of which I knew, and one cute guy that I had never seen before. We introduced ourselves - "Hi, I'm Charlotte!" I said, sticking my hand out for the traditional handshake. "Hi, I'm Scott!" he replied.
I couldn't believe it. It was the guy who had written the article!
Mid-handshake I just paused, looked him in the eye and exclaimed "Oh my goodness, you wrote that article!" I was completely awestruck. His picture both online and in the article that was hanging on my desk looked NOTHING like how he looked in person. He was soooo cute! Oh my, I was enamored.
He laughed (yay, he thought I was funny!) and replied "Yes, yes I am!" Looking around the room, clearly not expecting to be recognized for something that I assume he had written because my agency needed an article for its website. "What a good Friday!" he joked. A guy that is incredibly good-looking AND funny, that's something I could get on board with!
People started filtering in and the meeting began. The entire time, Scott was very professional, but he would sneak little jokes into the conversation. OH, and he is Australian, so he has the BEST accent ever! I was completely smitten. I went back to my desk in disbelief - how could this young, cute guy be so knowledgeable? He was perfect.
Since I had seen him in person, I found out where his desk was. I used to sit far from my team, so when I would go over to converse with them, I passed him every time. COULD ANYTHING BE BETTER IN THIS SITUATION?! Answer: no.
A week later, we all switched desks so that our team could be re-structured and everyone would be in the same area. I was happy to be by my team, but noticed that Scott's desk had moved too! I was a little sad until I creepily found his new desk - we sit kind of almost facing each other. These screens block our faces from actually looking, but it is still amazing.
If you don't think that I am totally weird by this post, congrats! Because I slightly weird myself out in this situation. Obviously nothing will ever happen with us, but it sill brightens up my day when we walk by each other and say "what's up?!"
Oh, I am such a smitten kitten (Phoebe Buffay reference, anyone?!).

The first day of anyone's career is always a great time to have awardrobe malfunction! (said no one ever)
And that's when it happened.
See, I probably should have mentioned earlier that the pencil skirt I wore had a zipper that spanned the entire height of the material. The 2 zippers were facing opposite ways and you zipped one up to the top and the bottom zipper could go as low as you wanted, depending on how high you wanted the back slit to be. I had it down all the way, leaving a little room at the bottom because it got SUPER narrow, I didn't want it all the way closed because it was hard to walk with it like that.
| This is what the zipper looked like. Imagine that bad boy splitting completely open. On your first day of work. |
I was walking up the LAST curb to the block of my office when I felt the pressure of the skirt suddenly relieve itself mid-lift. All of a sudden, I felt the bottom of my skirt start to SPLIT OPEN. That's right, a side of the zipper-lining at the bottom had popped off, ripping the zipper off one side. I didn't know what to do. With every stride, the back of my dress would open more and more and I had to be at new hire orientation in 10 minutes. I was starting to panic.
I ran into a souvenir shop 3 doors down from my office and asked if they had any safety pins. If I could just hold the skirt together with those until lunch, I could run home to change. The guys hardly spoke english and didn't understand what I was saying (also contributing to this miscommunication could have been my frantic state of mind), so I went to a corner of the store and totally took off the skirt. I was completely exposed for all the world to see! If I could get the broken zipper back on to the dress my problem would be solved.
After attempting for probably 2 minutes (though it only felt like 10 seconds), I realized that the zipper was never going to work again. I had to find some way to cover myself though - FAST. AND there were no stores open at this hour in the morning for me to buy something else!! I ended up using this wide belt I was wearing to hold the top of the skirt together against my waist, and then I tied my blazer coat around my waist under the belt so the torso part could cover my butt (think like a cape but lower). I would be border-line mooning people wearing this option but I honestly had no other choice. THANK GOODNESS advertising is business casual!
I walked into the office and immediately asked the receptionist if she thought the skirt was bad. She could tell I was super stressed and went into the bathroom with me to try to fix it. It actually wasn't a DISASTER, but I couldn't wear this for the entire day! AND at this point, orientation was beginning (I checked in to the building at 9:01, the lateness was KILLING ME inside).
I went into orientation and luckily, I wasn't the last one there. I have a friend in advertising that went to a different college, and she told me to look out for her friend who was also starting at my company today, and luckily she was sitting next to my assigned seat! We talked for a little and I told her what happened, she said the skirt didn't look too bad and I started to calm down about the whole situation.
Turns out, everyone thought my debacle was HILARIOUS. I apologized to the first few people I met and they were all like "this is a great story already!" No one commented that my skirt was inappropriate at all - they were more concerned with if I was okay! So yea, I work for pretty much the coolest company ever. 2 of the girls in my department even went shopping with me during lunch to pick out a new skirt (we ended up just going to Kmart because the store they wanted to take me to ended up being closed). And I found something that I would DEFINITELY wear again!
So that was my first day as a working professional. Sure it had a TERRIBLE start, but I'm glad everything happened the way it did. PLUS, I handled a very bizarre, stressful, traumatic situation pretty well, if I do say so myself!
I'M SO EXHAUSTED NOW AND WANT TO GO TO BED. Here's to a smoother tomorrow!

Late night ramblings
| HAHA - google image result for "stressed out person", this is great |
Oh, and I also need to remember to bring my passport. It's by my bag, but I just remembered like 30 minutes ago and now I am paranoid that I will forget that. AND, on top of it all, I think tomorrow morning it will rain. I have not tested out the subway commute to the office. I would have to take a cab! Ahhh life is hard ALL THE TIME.
While a big part of me is definitely nervous to begin my first big girl job (as you just saw), another part of me is REALLY EXCITED. I am beginning my professional career! I basically floated through college not caring about anything. Hey, I went to a very good school, and in advertising grades don't matter. Literally everything I learned was a waste. Well, except for the 2 advertising classes I was lucky enough to take - those were AMAZING! This is the first thing I've cared about in literally years, and I'm NOT going to let myself screw it up!
I have orientation from 9-11am, and then I will meet my team. As one of the people from my interesting Tinder experience told me, they wouldn't have hired me if they didn't think that I could do it. I just have to keep remembering that any time I get stressed. ALSO, someone from my company recently wrote an article giving advice to young professionals in the advertising field, so I have read through that once or twice. Or maybe four times. (News alert: he is actually on the account that I am on! Though OBVI in a veryyy senior position. I'm still hoping to be able to have some interaction with him though!)
Okay, I do feel a lot better now that my thoughts have been written down. Time to go to sleep. Goodnight, world!

Green is not an attractive color on anyone
I am encountering this very problem.
One of my “best friend’s”, Chloe (whose name has obviously been changed for this, but in this post and all future ones that is what I will call her), is that very person I just described. She has had my back in many situations, though sometimes more drama has been caused than what was necessary. I always liked that she would be there for me – being from a more aggressive city, and being proud of it, it was nice to have someone that strong by my side. I am more of a kill-them-with-kindness kind of person, so sometimes it was nice to have that aggression in my defense.
I never cared much about grades. In advertising, no one really cares about that bullshit. I don’t care if I understand accounting or finance or everything in my music class. I just wanted to graduate with over a 3.0. Trust me, this was incredibly WEIRD at the college I attended, where everyone hyperventilated over an A-. Chloe was one of those types of people. While I was more than content to get back my B’s, she would go in and cry to professors over her A- paper in an effort to get that A. So, in terms of grades, she was leaps and bounds better than me. But I never minded.
[caption id="attachment_66" align="alignright" width="235"]
We took an advertising class together – a class I had my eye on since my admittance to my college. The day before the class began, Chloe was debating if she even wanted to take it, but I convinced her it was a good idea and that it would be a lot of fun. When the first day of class arrived, we needed to elect a student president to lead us during the entire course. I undoubtedly ran for that position. I mean, this class was one of the main reasons I chose this school, leading it would be an amazing experience for me. Chloe also decided to run for president, clearly for the leadership role it would allow her to write on her resume. Not only did she get the presidency, I was not elected to ANY board position to lead, and there were 5 of them. Talk about a soul-crushing experience. While it was difficult for me to deal with at first, I sucked it up and did the class. I was supportive of Chloe and her leadership and never let that wane out.
Chloe also got a job before me. I was so happy for her (mainly for 2 reasons, 1- any time anyone in the advertising/PR industry got a job at that point, it gave me hope; and 2- I knew we weren’t competing for any of the same positions that I was applying to). She got a healthcare PR gig. Not the most exciting thing in the world, but healthcare is a great base for all future endeavors because of all the regulations that come with that industry. Anyways, we had a great time celebrating, and I was excited (I knew that I had some big opportunities arriving in the future and I was excited to celebrate my employment in the same way).
When I found out that I made it past the preliminary interview for the job I am starting in a week and a half, I was ECSTATIC. This company is beyond huge, and the account I was interviewing for was so exciting. I felt like I needed someone to pinch me to wake me up. When I shared the news with Chloe at lunch one day, she was un-amused. She hardly asked any questions, and the one-sided conversation about the position was over in less than 2 minutes. It was one of the most disappointing things I had ever experienced in my life. I was so genuinely excited for her when she got her job. Buying drinks, telling everyone around me, tweeting a huge congrats message, didn’t I deserve the same excitement?
[caption id="attachment_70" align="alignleft" width="211"]
I stopped talking to Chloe about the second-round interviews I had for the position. She would ask me via text how everything was going in attempts to be supportive, and I would reply, but no response would come through on her end. And when I got the job, all I got was a text, “Congrats”.
Who knew silence could speak so loud? We didn’t go through the same celebration for my employment. No fun girls night with our close group, no celebratory tweets, no big announcements to those around us when we all went out that weekend. Now that I had something better than her, it was as though this giant green monster had overtaken Chloe, and it appeared as though there was no sign of it leaving.
The giant elephant is still in the room. Chloe and I are still close, but now there is something there that I cannot just put out of my mind. As long as she comes out on top, Chloe is 100000% supportive of me like a true friend. However, when I am given an amazing opportunity, when my hard work finally pays off, when I get something that is so much better than what she has, she shuts everything down. Is that a true friend? A friend worth having?
I’m not sure what the answer is. But jealously is an ugly thing. Letting it show could be the greatest fault a person can have. I honestly don’t know what is going to happen to us when we move to New York.

Offer Official!
My celebration was cut short when I realized that I still need to find a place to live. This summer, I plan on subletting for a few months. I want to live in NYC for a little before deciding where I want to permanently reside (well reside for 1 year, at least). I also have some friends who I want to live with, and their jobs aren't starting until September. Well, one of their jobs isn't starting until September, the other needs to figure out what she is doing, but I will put enough pressure on her so she will figure it out by then.
So, I have officially started the Craigslist room search escapade. It sounds extremely sketchy (I did watch that movie The Craigslist Killer when it was on TV - oh my goodness how terrifying!) but I have a friend who did it and loves the roommates she found on it! Plus, with advertising's salary being so low, I figure I should give it a shot.
Hopefully, I will officially be in NYC during Memorial Day weekend! Until then, I must apartment-search my eyes out until I find a place that's just right.
Catch ya on the flip-side,
-Charlotte

First post
I've been thinking about doing this for a few months now, and with a final paper to finish up that is due tomorrow, I think that now would be the best time to start. And procrastinate. This blog is going to document my first year of post-grad life. I am going into advertising in NYC. Yes, I do realize that with an incredibly low salary and the high cost of living there, it is going to be a struggle. But I've dreamt (spell check says that's not a word, but I'm pretty sure it's lying right now) about moving to New York my whole life, and I've wanted to go into advertising for over 7 years. When I set my mind out to do something, it is going to happen. You can quote me on that. Well, actually, it will be already quoted since I just wrote it and this is my blog.
Yea, so I am not sure who all is going to read this. It's really just so I can remember my first year out of school. I'll look at this blog later in my life and look back on how much fun I had/how naive I was. This entire time, I am going to try to remain anonymous. My sign-off name is not my own, the names in the stories I tell will be changed, places will be made up, etc etc etc. We will see how that goes, I may have to re-evaluate if all the entries start becoming incredibly vanilla and boring. My worst fear is being boring so that absolutely CANNOT happen with this blog! I am not telling any of my friends about this, not listing it on any of my social media sites, and when I put a picture for my icon (yes I still have to do that) I am going to make it blurry. Apologies in advance if the photo ends up just looking like a bunch of colors and you have no idea what it is supposed to be. YIKES, that will be interesting.
So that is pretty much all I have to say in this first post. I've tried blogging before but I always get too busy to continue it, so I am going to say that I will try to update this at least once a week. If I don't have at least 30 minutes to myself every week, I'd say I am doing something wrong and need to make some better lifestyle choices.
That's all for now folks, until next time!
-Charlotte
